Kill everyone in the town if they worship other gods

Deuteronomy 13:12-19 - If you hear it said about one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you to live in that wicked men have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (gods you have not known), then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you, you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. Destroy it completely, both its people and its livestock. Gather all the plunder of the town into the middle of the public square and completely burn the town and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the LORD your God. It is to remain a ruin forever, never to be rebuilt. None of those condemned things shall be found in your hands, so that the LORD will turn from his fierce anger; he will show you mercy, have compassion on you, and increase your numbers, as he promised on oath to your forefathers, because you obey the LORD your God, keeping all his commands that I am giving you today and doing what is right in his eyes.

PERSONAL COMMENTARY

Why not just kill the "wicked men?"

God is infinite in His wisdom and goodness. It is not our place as finite human beings to question God.

However, it's ok to question the writings of mere men who defamed God's character.

The Bible is the inspired Word of God.

I find it interesting that I simply quote a scripture DIRECTLY from the Bible and I'm accused of questioning God. These verses by nature question the God as defined by modern Christianity (a loving heavenly father who cares for his children and wants them to be safe, healthy, and prosperous).

Please note that I am not questioning God. The Bible itself is questioning your defintion of God.

One of your posters said, 'It is not our place as finite human beings to question God.'

Oh, yes it is! 1 Thess 5:21. Make sure of all things. Hold fast to what is fine.

How does one make sure, without questioning? Blind acceptance of murder and genocide does not make it right because it was done by God. God is supposed to be the example: we were made in his image i.e. to reflect his qualities.

Yeah, right!

"The Bible is the most dangerous book ever written on this earth, keep it under lock and key"
( George Bernard Shaw.}

I'm convinced why that great historian said this and truly this horrific verse in the Bible and many others are the reason why he made that statement.

It's all about context. God is speaking to Israel, specifically referring to the land He gave them.
He's not referring to the world at large.

This is one of many commands made by Him specifically regarding His people. You don't go into God's realm and blaspheme him.

Who are God's people and who are not?
