God's view of slavery

Leviticus 25:44-46 Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may acquire slaves. You may also acquire some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

PERSONAL COMMENTARY

Why was God ever pro-slavery?

Slaves is such a interesting term, isn't it. We hear "slave" and we think of people shackled and beaten and working 23 hours a day.

Is this slave description ever given in Biblical times?

Secondly the anti-slavery movement is less then 200 years old. You wouldn't be asking this same question 1000 years ago. The Bible isn't right or wrong based on current public opinion... :)

Perhaps it would be best if you quit mocking and "having fun" with God's Word.

It is obvious that YOU are a slave............to satan.

Anonymous,

Why is quoting scripture and asking a question about it "mocking and 'having fun' with God's Word?"

perhaps avoiding the old testament all together might clear up some things...

I found an interesting read at http://www.godwords.org/posts.php?id=31

I would suggest point 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 (emphasizing 7). Feel free t read point 5, but I am not so certain about the author's conclusion concerning how great of a deal this was for women.

Basically, slavery then was quite different. And we read previously in Leviticus (25:35) concerning the example of a poor countryman, "help him as you would an alien or a temporary resident." This suggests that they had a responsibility to treat their neighbors well.

Someone want to say that there is no slave in the Bible time, or "slave" can mean a good career 2000 years ago?

If "slave" does not have the same meaning as of today, how about other words in the Bible?
1) God
2) Power
3) Mercy
4) Life
5) Death
6) Sin

Why publish a book that anybody will have misunderstand then?

"He who kidnaps a man, whether he sells him or he is found in his possession, shall surely be put to death." (Exodus 21:16)

Just like I don't define myself to be an administrative assistant, I don't define my self being a "sinner" either. Sin is a word that has been made up to make you feel guilty and repented. Just as "administrative assistant" is a word that defines what you do for a living. Sin has nothing to do with me. The god of the bible is a myth. The bible itself is filled with contradictions and magical stories. The bible is a proponent of Slavery. The bible wants you to kill people that bow to other gods, that are homosexual or that are having unlawful intercourse.
