Elijah calls down fire from heaven to kill 102 men

2 Kings 1:9-12 Then he sent to Elijah a captain with his company of fifty men. The captain went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him, "Man of God, the king says, 'Come down!' " Elijah answered the captain, "If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!" Then fire fell from heaven and consumed the captain and his men. At this the king sent to Elijah another captain with his fifty men. The captain said to him, "Man of God, this is what the king says, 'Come down at once!' " "If I am a man of God," Elijah replied, "may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!" Then the fire of God fell from heaven and consumed him and his fifty men.

PERSONAL COMMENTARY

Couldn't Elijah use a more humane sign to prove that he's a man of God?

The Bible. It's something like 45 authors producing 66 books over 14-1500 years. If you give it a serious read, you will find the answers for all who have sought wisdom. The complexity and interconnectedness of these works is beautifully surreal; they produce one story. The story of the redemption of humanity.

No real science, archeology, history, unfulfilled prophecy or any other source can bring question to the veracity of the Bible...creation and our conscience confirm it's God's Word.

If the Bible is our sourcebook for truth, then the crowning event within human history is the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. I believe you must ask yourself who is Jesus.

Seems harsh yes, but the reality is, they didn't have a fear of God and thus served as an example for everyone reading the holy word. You'll notice the third captain decided to show respect, sadly enough it takes destroying a 100 or so people with fire to get some respect from some people. Besides, people who have lived rightously have died more horribly then they, probably younger too. Jesus Christ was crucified, the prophet Isiah was cut in half, Stephen the first christian martyr was stoned to death preaching salvation to his murderer's and he even said "Lord forgive them." Before he died. Would you bemoan if God killed those (if unrepentent) murderer's with fire...?

The fire who consumed the captains and their fifties was from God. God showed them that they were not treating Elijah they way a man of God was supposed to be treated. Had they not been discourteous God's wrath will not consume them. The third captain did the right thing, humbled himself. Thus God spared his life with his men.

Could it be that the "fire from heaven" was the same as in Job and that Elijah was only asking God to do His strange act, that is, to stop protecting them since they didn't want God anyway?

Bigger thought, why did the king think it would take 50 soldiers to bring in one person?

Luke 9:54, Jesus has set his face toward Jerusalem, the "Samarians" didnt want to recieve them. the two sons of thunder wanted to call down fire from heaven. Jesus rebuked them, and then in Rom 12, says we dont repay evil for evil. So we go back to 2 Kings and we see that 102 men died. cool thought is that both stories are in Samaria, both are fire called down from Heaven. Im not sure why one happened and one didnt, but I love the search for the answer. I know in the Book it is there and its is my privalage to search it out. if you have thoughts on this, id love to hear em.
